The Tanga region has one of the richest gem mining histories in Africa — the area around Kalalani and Umba hosts deposits of gem-quality sapphire, garnet, and tsavorite that have supplied the world market for decades. This Rose Garnet is from the 2025 digs, which matters — early 2024 material when this variety first appeared was known for sugaring, and the 2025 production is noticeably cleaner. These three pieces show no visible sugaring and display excellent open color, a vivid saturated pink-rose that is the hallmark of the finest material from this source. Typical surface fissures on the skin will need to be worked through but the facet rough inside is clean. A genuinely new and desirable variety from one of the world’s most storied gem regions.
